adidas womens shoes Leominster’s Machado gets invite to MLS combine
Major League Soccer has announced that Leominster’s Fabio Machado is one of 55 Division 1 intercollegiate invitees to next month’s 2015 adidas MLS Player Combine.
Machado graduated from Leominster High School as the boys’ soccer program’s record holder in goals (77) and points (111) in 2010 and currently attends Providence College as a member of the Friars men’s soccer team, which has played its way into the sport’s Final Four this weekend.
Should the 11th seeded Friars upset the Bruins, they’ll move on to Sunday’s College Cup final against either 16th seeded Virginia or unranked University of Maryland Baltimore County.
According to a release from Major League Soccer, Machado and the other 54 seniors were selected by a committee consisting of Division 1 coaches from every conference as well as by MLS representatives. They will be joined by other seniors, including those from lower NCAA divisions, underclassmen who sign Generation adidas contracts, and other international invitees, who will be announced at a later date.
The combine will be held Jan. 8 13 in Fort Lauderdale,
Fla. Two days later, on Jan. 15, the MLS SuperDraft will take place in Philadelphia.
If he is drafted, Machado, who recently received All Region honors for his play this fall, would join fellow Leominster native Diego Fagundez in the MLS and would be the third athlete with local ties drafted by a professional sports organization within the past seven months.
In June, Tyler Beede the son of former Fitchburg High baseball standout Walter Beede was drafted be the world champion San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 2014 Major League Baseball draft. Later, Adam Ravenelle of Sudbury the son of Fitchburg Schools Superintendent Andre R. Ravenelle was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fourth round.
