Elder, who has played two seasons as a UM cornerback,began practicing Sunday with the Hurricanes basketball team,coachJim Larranaga confirmed.
A former two sport star at Nashville Ensworth School,Elder signed a football scholarship UM in 2013 and planned to walk onto the court. A torn meniscus during football season squashed that plan.
Healthy last season, Elder played in all 13 games (one start),made 34 tackles and registered four pass break ups, three tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and one sack.

Elder was a two time winner of Tennessee Mr. Football back of the year award. He won three state titles in football and two in basketball, and wonthree state tournament MVP awards in a row. He averaged 20.2 points per game as a senior.
The 5 foot 10, 188 pound sophomore will bring toughness to UM practices, but likely will not see much playing time, if any. UM has lots of depth at guard withAngel Rodriguez,Deandre Burnett,Sheldon McClellan,Manu Lecomte,Ja Newton andJames Palmer. All are returning next season.
