womens adidas shoes Jodi Matlock to be honored as YMCA Canada Peace Makers

This week, YMCA’s across Canada will be handing out medals to deserving members in their communities. The recipients are nominated by their peers and sometimes by strangers but regardless of the source the individuals being recognized have incredible influence on the communities where they live.

Since moving to Pictou County a little over ten years ago, Jodi Matlock has made a lot of friends. “As a pharmacist, volunteer, fitness enthusiast and motivator, Jodi’s energy and motivation is limitless,” says YMCA CEO Dave McIntyre.

Jodi is a long time member of the Kinette Club and through her service to this organization has helped raise awareness and funds for many different initiatives not only in Pictou County but throughout Nova Scotia. She is a dedicated soccer coach, and Can Skate instructor, volunteers with a number of different projects at her daughter’s schools in Stellarton and has become one of the most popular spin instructors at the Y.

“I don’t think Jodi ever thought of her self as a peace maker, but when you have a person like Jodi in your community who just makes life a little happier, a little healthier, it goes along way to creating peace,

” says McIntyre as he thinks forward to sharing the Medallions on Friday evening.

“The noon time “Spin with Jodi” has become a ritual for many people and she has made a huge impact on the life style of many people attending her class,” says Laura Leahy, Fitness Director at the Y.

“She has the ability to reach people who really need the help as well and work side by side with other people like her to increase awareness about the things that matter most; family and health. And she does all of this with out making a lot of noise,” adds McIntyre.

Scott Jones, also being nominated for service to his community might not make a lot of noise but he does make a lot of music. While he has recently become a household name in Pictou County because of a senseless attack that left him paralyzed you can bet that Scott Jones is already singing a tune when most people in his shoes would have a hard time uttering a word.

“You will never meet a more peaceful, peace promoting person, says Sherise Jones, Scott’s sister.

“He is able to dissolve an argument or disagreement with just a special smile, look, or laugh and can turn confrontations to opportunities for education and personal growth,” she adds.

Scott Jones has a lengthy list of service. From Sackville, New Brunswick to Korea. From Zambia to Pictou County, Scott’s love for music and humanity continues to change lives.

“Even from such a tragedy, Scott has this ability to create peace in our community,” says McIntyre.

“I wish that the Y was giving Scott this honor with out him having to face these life changing injuries. He has accomplished so much in his young life to make him a well deserved Peace Maker. I know that this amazing young man has an incredible life ahead of him.”

There are more than 1500 individuals and groups across Canada who proudly identify themselves as recipients of the YMCA Peace Medallion, and this number continues to grow. Every year, at events across the country, Associations celebrate and honor dedicated peace builders by awarding them the YMCA Peace Medallion. This event has an ongoing impact on the recipients and for the YMCA itself.

The YMCA of Pictou County will present the Peace Medallions on Friday evening in the Y gymnasium following the community candlelight Peace Walk that will depart from the Y at 6:30 pm.
