Convenience Store Robbed at Knifepoint
A man with a knife got away with more than $700 in an early morning robbery in Carbon County. to the Convenient Food Mart in the 600 block of Delaware Avenue in Palmerton. Investigators said the man had a dark bandanna over his face and threatened the clerk with a folding knife with a black handle and a black blade. The violation concerns a building in Peckville where Mellow had a district office. In 2007 Mellow became part owner of the building but continued to use state money to pay rent on the office in the building. Daniel Davis, 18, of Edwardsville is accused of robbing the Sunoco gas station on Wyoming Avenue in Forty Fort Sunday. He is charged with robbery, theft, harassment and related crimes. He is in the Luzerne County jail.
More Charges for Arson Suspects
Two men already behind bars on arson charges are now accused of setting more fires. State police said Zane Snyder of Milton and Charles Jacobs of Lewisburg are responsible for a barn fire off Route 642 near Lewisburg in January and a truck fire near Lewisburg in February and tried to set fire to a vacant house in March, also near Lewisburg. The men, who are both volunteer firefighters, have admitted setting six fires in Northumberland, Montour and Union counties. Holden
In a stunning upset in the 17th Congressional District, Lackawanna County attorney Matthew Cartwright upset incumbent Democratic Congressman Tim Holden Tuesday night in the Pennsylvania primary election. Cartwright told supporters that Representative Holden called him and graciously conceded the race. He went on to thank his supporters for all their hard work. Troopers said someone broke into United in Christ Lutheran Church in Kelly Township near West Milton sometime between Sunday and Monday and stole music equipment worth about $2,500. Another break in was reported the same time in neighboring White Deer Township at Sunrise Methodist Church. Nothing was taken. The third break in was reported at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Turbot Township near Milton. Lester Barraza of Mahanoy City and Jose Lopez of Hazleton were arrested Tuesday in Hazleton. Investigators also seized nearly 300 bags of heroin,
cash and a car. Both men are charged with possession with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance and delivery of a controlled substance.
Suspected Bank Robbery Arrested
A man suspected of robbing a bank in West Hazleton Tuesday afternoon and wanted for another bank robbery last week is now in police custody. Police arrested Shawn Kelley, 33, of Hazleton late Tuesday afternoon shortly after Citizens Bank on West Broad Street in West Hazleton was robbed. a man handed the teller a note stating he had a gun, but no gun was shown. Emergency crews had been going in and out of Big Pocono State Park near Camelback Ski Resort since Monday when the car belonging to 61 year old Angela Mayo of Mount Pocono was located. Tuesday afternoon the Monroe County coroner was called to the park where Mayo body was found. An autopsy is scheduled and the investigation continues.
Is Musto Healthy Enough for Trial?
The corruption trial for former State Senator Ray Musto of Luzerne County could be in jeopardy because of health issues. The 83 year old from Pittston Township was scheduled to go to trial in June on charges he took tens of thousands of dollars in bribes, but his attorney filed a motion with the court Monday arguing that Musto is not healthy enough to stand trial. According to the motion, Musto doctors said he is suffering from liver disease. An arrest warrant was issued Tuesday for Shawn Kelley of East Chestnut Street. Troopers said he is the man who robbed the PNC Bank on Route 93 last Monday. Surveillance cameras in the bank captured pictures of the man police identified as Kelley. Investigators ask anyone with information about Kelley to call them at 570 459 3890.
Jury selection is underway in Bradford County for a double murder trial. John DeSisti of Waverly, New York is charged with the November, 2006 shootings of prominent lawyer David Keeffe and his wife, Carol on their property near Sayre. Prosecutors said DeSisti and Carol Keeffe are cousins and were involved in a property dispute at the time of the killings. DeSisti, who is in his mid 70 arrested in December,
